400 t H-frame for grid-scale transformer installation

CAD-engineered four-point H-frame with integrated load cells for a grid-scale transformer placement, delivered and proof-tested inside 14 weeks.

Client: UK grid operator contractor (confidential)

Somers multi-point spreader handling a batch of aluminium billets in an extrusion plant.

Challenge

A grid operator's contractor needed a lifting frame for a 340 t grid transformer with a tight programme and no tolerance for schedule slippage. The transformer's lift points sat on a non-standard geometry; generic spreader beams weren't a viable option. Lloyd's witnessing was required at proof-load test.

Engineering response

Somers Handling engineered a 400 t four-point H-frame to the transformer's lift-point geometry, with integrated load cells on each leg for real-time load-share monitoring. FEA covered both the working case and the fault case with one leg taking additional share. Proof-load test was Lloyd's-witnessed at our works before dispatch.

Outcome

The frame shipped inside the 14-week contract window, Lloyd's certificate issued at test, and transformer installation went ahead on schedule. Per-leg load monitoring gave the lift engineer live data through the critical positioning sequence — a first for the contractor.

Grid transformer installations run on tight schedules — substation outages are booked months in advance and any slip means either carrying the outage or paying a large reschedule bill. The contractor needed a 400 t-rated H-frame designed and delivered inside 14 weeks, to match a transformer geometry that didn’t fit any available modular spreader.

Design started from the transformer manufacturer’s lift-point drawings. The H-frame was modelled in CAD with FEA covering the nominal case, the asymmetric-loading fault case, and the dropped-leg safety case. Integrated load cells on each leg gave the lift engineer a live readout of load-share during positioning — something the contractor had previously only had on one other project.

Outcomes

  • Full design, manufacture, Lloyd’s-witnessed proof-load test, and delivery inside the 14-week window.
  • Per-leg load-share monitoring in real time during the lift.
  • Transformer in place and energised on schedule.
